2016 ACC Conference: Tasmania

2016 Conference Report

Over 80 ACC members gathered in the village of Poatina for the ACC National conference and AGM 7 - 9 November 2016.

A beautiful intentional Christian community, we were looked after very well by the wonderful team and extend our blessings to the Poatina Village in their ministry of hospitality.

We were blessed by presentations from our keynote speakers. The Catholic Archbishop of Hobart, The Most Reverend Julian Porteous presented an overview of the changed worldview in our society especially in relation to sexual practice (in a wide-ranging address on the theme of 'Standing Firm in times of trial'. The Anglican Bishop of Tasmania, the Right Reverend Richard Condie provided a word of encouragement and true ecumenical spirit (Confessing Christ together). Mrs Wendy Francis, Queensland State Officer for the Australian Christian Lobby provided a helpful overview of the public work being undertaken in a variety of areas today within the wider Christian community, encouraging us to continue to be 'salt and light' in Australia (Standing Firm together in the public sphere). Our own Rev. Rod James gave a full overview of the issues that have developed and are developing in the context of redefining gender (Standing Firm Together on Gender).

The ACC Declaration on Marriage and the Family was formally approved for submission to the UCA National Assembly, and the whole declaration and resolutions will be provided to congregations and summary forms included in the magazine, website and mailings. UCA President Stuart McMillan with Anglican Bishop of Tasmania Richard Condie

Strong representation was also made to the UCA National Assembly President Mr Stuart McMillan (pictured here with Anglican Bishop Richard Condie) and representatives from the Assembly Doctrine Working Group who attended the conference for a special session as part of the UCA's consideration of the theology of marriage. This is part of the process happening before further debate at the 2018 UCA Assembly. The ACC heard about the overall process that is being followed and questions or comments were provided for the ACC to consider in the debate.

The conference was blessed by our bible study leaders, by the worship team and through being in a prayerful and Christian environment. The papers and reports (as available) will be included on the ACC website and some of the papers will be published in future editions of the magazine.
