"Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up." (Daniel 3:16-18)
These three young men refused to worship the king's idol and were to be thrown into the furnace as punishment. They knew that God had the power to save them from the flames but they didn't know if He would. In either case, they knew their eternal fate was safe in His hands.
Faith in Christ does not mean that we know what's going to happen, and it doesn't guarantee our physical safety. But faith does tell us that our lives are safe with God through what He has done for us. We know that He will save us, but we don't know how each situation will turn out. Faith gives us an unshakable foundation because we know primarily the faithfulness of our Father - that He knows best and is in control. We also know that in the furnace the Son of God will be with us to take us safely through the fire.
